The Challenges of Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle
Today, people are more conscious of fitness and health. Media and online sties today are full on info on the healthy lifestyle, the right kinds of food to eat, and whatever you need to know on achieving this kind of lifestyle. Despite the numerous articles and information that we have, there are still may people who are unhealthy and have failed to achieve their health and fitness goals. We have received plenty of warnings of eating high-calorie diets and engaging in harmful behaviors, yet we still eat these foods and engage in these behaviors. There are those that have given their best to do these things but have utterly failed. This indicates that achievivng a healthy lifestyle is a difficult thing to do which is also evidenced by the increasing stress-related sicknesses that people experience today. So, where does the problem lie?
The difficulty in adopting healthy behaviors lie in the psychological influence of gratification. We want to receive instant gratification for an action immediately instead of waiting for its rewards. People will choose an instant reward anytime if asked to decide between that or something that can be had in the future which is far better than the instant one. The problem with people is that they want everything now and they can’t wait for something that will still happen in the future even it is a far better reward than what you can have now.
Applying this case to health, anything you do to benefit your body will not be seen immediately. While you know that it is not good to be overweight, dieting and exercise puts you off when you think of feeling hungry afterwards, getting tired and sweaty and having you deny yourself treats for a long time. Since there is no immediate reward to exercising and eating less, even though you will feel better for trying, you let it pass. And this is the reason why many people fail to achieve the healthy lifestyle.
Applying instant gratification to your health problem can be a solution to this problem. It is not really impossible to gain health benefits while laying aside instant gratification. Gratification perception can be overcome in different ways. There are many tricks that can help you overcome this. It is possible to add a bit of instant gratification to your health plan. If, then, you are able to achieve a health goal, do something to motivate yourself. You can start reducing rewards as you get used to your new habits.
Don’t make a mistake of rewarding yourself with food items that will go against your health goals. These things can get you past the need for instant gratification.
